June Client of the Month-Katelyn
If you have been to the Studio in the evening, odds are you have met or seen Katelyn. Katelyn is extremely dedicated to Pilates and understandably so. Katelyn has a rare condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Her joints are extremely susceptible to dislocation and constant pain. Pilates has been one of the few things that has helped her and her story humbles me every day.
Being able to help Katelyn has been my most rewarding Pilates experiences to date. She is wise beyond her years and tackles every challenge in her life with an open heart, confidence, and enthusiasm. She was my very first client here at the Studio and it has been an absolute honor to have her here.
Her progress through Pilates constantly leaves me in awe. It seems like every week she has a huge Pilates milestone that brings tears to my eyes. She consistently shows up twice a week and it shows. In a very short period of time Katelyn has mastered concepts and movements that took me years to grasp. She is nothing short of extraordinary.
"My name is Katelyn and I am a senior in high school. Growing up I was active in whatever sports were available to me but when I was 12 I started experiencing severe back pain. For three years I went to countless doctors and had every test available done until I was finally diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome-Hypermobility when I was 15. I was told that if I continued with sports and anything involving impact I would be paralyzed before I graduated high school. Staying active is a crucial part to staying healthy for someone with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, however it can be extremely hard to find a form of exercise because of the severe joint pain and risk of dislocations. As my health began deteriorating making it through every day became harder and harder. I continued my search for something that would let me have somewhat of a normal life.
What brought you to Pilates?
As I was continued searching for some sort of activity I would be able to do, I saw an article online for Katie’s Pilates studio with a comment from someone who has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome as well saying how much it has helped them. Right away I looked into Pilates and the benefits it can have for someone with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I was hopeful that I had finally something that would allow me to stay active and I had!
What changes have you noticed in your body?
Since starting Pilates I have noticed countless changes in my body. I used to have about 1-2 days a week I would not be able to get out of bed because of the severe pain. However since coming to Pilates these “bad” days have become almost nonexistent. I have become so much stronger both mentally and physically and the amount of dislocations I experience has also been decreasing greatly.
What changes have you noticed in your life?
Since coming to Pilates the day to day things I could barely accomplish before have become things I can do with ease. I am able to go on hikes and bike rides with my family and friends- things I have not been able to do in years. Katie’s belief and support of me have allowed me to accomplish many of the things I thought I would never be able to do again.
What keeps you coming back?
Katie and Pilates is the saving hope that I so desperately needed at that point in my life. Katie’s support, encouragement, and teaching abilities have given me the ability to once again have a positive outlook on life and the mindset that I can do anything I set my heart on. The calm and purpose that both Katie and Pilates has given to my life is what keeps me coming back. "
